Noël Um: Reclaiming the female body: gender inequality, symptom manifestation and shamanic healing in Korea
Biomedicine explains mental illness through pathologizing a specific set of symptoms and treats it as a biological illness or a disability through a combination of psycho-pharmaceutical intervention and therapy. However, traditional biomedical approaches to mental illness can disregard area-specific, cultural approaches to healing and intervention. In this workshop, we will explore the concept of "culture-bound syndromes" as defined by the DSM-IV, and see how Korean female shamans reimagine symptoms as signs of shamanic calling.
